Saving energy and money just got easier

We're thrilled to announce that starting today, tracking your energy use got a little easier. When you buy Blue Line’s PowerCost Monitor and WiFi, your real-time home energy use will be wirelessly uploaded into your Hohm profile. You no longer have to wait for your electricity bill – you can make a significant difference in your monthly energy use today.

By enabling devices like the Blue Line PowerCost Monitor to connect into Hohm, you will receive more detailed energy use information than what you are currently getting on your monthly bill. And with our easy-to-use graphs, you can quickly see how to save the most energy and money. For instance, check out the impact hot weather and an air conditioner working overtime had on energy use in the graph below on July 8:

And if we look at what was happening in the house that day, the graph really comes to life:

  • At about 9:00 a.m., the air conditioning was turned on and ran briefly.
  • At about 11:00 a.m., the air conditioning was turned off.
  • At about 1:00 p.m., the air conditioning was turned on again briefly, and then turned on for the rest of the day at about 3:00 p.m.
  • At about 11:00 p.m., the air conditioning was turned off and dishwasher completed its cycle.

Hohm captured all this information in real time from the Blue Line monitor and made it easy to see and understand; and in the graph below you can see the corresponding impact this had on energy cost for the day (please note that to calculate energy cost we estimate energy costs regionally based on data we collect ).

Obviously this won’t mean the end of air conditioners, but we do think it will raise people’s awareness about how much energy their appliances are using and make smarter decisions accordingly. In fact, studies show that consumers who use energy-monitoring devices can save up to 15% on their bill. With an average Hohm Score in the U.S. of 61 and an average annual electricity cost of $1,244, this means consumers could be saving hundreds of dollars a year just by monitoring their energy use.

Providing this level of insight with easy tools to manage and reduce your energy use is what Microsoft Hohm is all about. So I encourage you to buy Blue Line’s PowerCost Monitor and WiFi and connect it into Hohm and begin saving energy and money today. The monitor is safe and easy to install (no electrician required), easy to use and a wonderful addition to the Hohm experience. Check out this video to see for yourself.

For regular readers of this blog, you already know that our vision for Hohm is to create a healthy ecosystem of connected devices in your home. Our announcement today is just one step toward our longer term goal of connecting to smart plugs, HVAC, smart appliances, smart thermostats, lighting, electric vehicles, and just about anything else that uses energy. We see a future where—through Hohm—all of these things can work together seamlessly to provide everyone with convenient tools to understand, manage and reduce their energy use.

As always, I encourage you to engage with the Hohm community on Facebook and Twitter to learn more about what you can do with Hohm or to share your own experiences and recommendations.

While I like the idea it comes down to cost, it is tough to get me interested in monitoring my power use when it costs this much.  I guess it comes down to the usual issue, urban people have a lot of inefficient equipment because they can't afford the up front cost of upgrading.  $300 now for the monitor to maybe save me that much over the coming year is still $300 I don't have.  If the utility were to give these away or even better upgrade the meter to something I could monitor on my own it would be much more universal.

I've been in the HVAC business in South TX for over thirty years. This is a fantastic product that would help all energy consumers in my area. I will be purchasing and testing this on my own house soon.

I'll let you know what i find out. I will then recommend it others.

    Thanks

How will this monitor handle energy exported from renewable sources like wind and solar?  If the meter goes backwards will it show as an export?

With double meter systems (import vs export) can 2 sensors be combined to tally net energy?

    This is great!

Do you lose your data if the batteries die on the electricity meter unit or the readout display unit?

its a great information . i am going to bookmark it now..

This option is fantastic! I just installed a Black & Decker power monitor and the Blue Line Innovations WiFi gateway last night (took less than an hour for both) and connected to Hohm.

Already I have been able to visually see just how much power is being used in my house and I can see that something is drawing power that I didn't expect.

There is no question that this system will help me to better manage our household power consumption. Great work guys, keep it up!

I can get this information from our local electric utility, PG&E, since they installed the "smart" meter.  This is basically an equivalent system.  The detailed line chart from Blue Line looks a little better than the PG&E chart, but PG&E has a similar hour by hour chart.

The problem with both of these systems is that they still don't really show what each appliance within the home is actually using; you have to surmise what each is using.

I see that GE has the Nucleus energy monitor, which is supposed cost between $149 and $199 (by 2011), but it is dependent on zigbee devices embedded into GE specific appliances; limiting consumer choice of appliances.

Until we get active sensors that easily (and inexpensively) fit in line with the power lines/cords, it will be too much for the mass consumer to manage.  And until we make it available to the mass consumer, we won't see the efficiency of scale we need.

    I agree, though... good start.

Are there any plans to add other devices like Current Cost Power Monitor?   Also, it would be nice if there was a place to add alternate energy production for Solar or Wind Electric Meters.

I have been dedicated to Energy Conservation projects for about 8 yrs now in Mexico and US.
Even if you can Find some gadgets that can help reduce electricity, the best way of doing it is self discipline.

Now watch out, there are many, many scams that promise huge savings and are just a black box.

There are 2 ways looking at this great opportunity, as a benefit for our planet and as an investment.

Last advice, always look for the Return of investment time when making a change.

What might be the applications for commercial electrical needs?  I have both residential and commercial customers that may be interested in this, but as has already been mentioned, is it cost effective?  I have several clients looking for more eco-friendly solutions and I am wanting to meet those needs as best I can. Thoughts?

Blue Line allows a user to keep an eye on their energy consumption in real time and make immediate changes to help minimize consumption and, of course, the amount owed to the utility company every month. Connecting the device to a dashboard like Hohm makes monitoring and managing energy consumption easier the information is automatically uploaded to a user's profile and displayed in a consumer-friendly format.

Aw, this was a really quality post. In theory I'd like to write like this too – taking time and real effort to make a good article… but what can I say… I procrastinate alot and never seem to get something done.
